Born as Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Skopje, then part of Kosovo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire, Mother Teresa was the youngest child of Nikolle and Dranafile Bojaxhiu. Since her early years, Mother Teresa was fascinated by the works of missionaries and their services in Bengal. At the age of eighteen, she left her home to join the Sisters of Loretto at Loreto Abbey in Rathfarnham.
In 1929, Mother Teresa arrived in India and began her novitiate in Darjeeling, where she learned Bengali and taught at St. Teresa’s School near her convent.
